I was young, just starting my first business, and ready to get a car of my own. Every cool kid in my community drove a Lexus IS, so I walked into a Lexus dealership. I didn't know the first thing about leasing.

The salesman saw me coming. For two hours he sat with me, found out we were both from New York, made me feel like a friend, and never stopped pushing. I wanted to say yes. I couldn't afford to. So I kept saying, "Let me check with my dad."

Every time I hesitated, the deal got better. It started at $390 a month with $2,000 down on a base IS 250. Two hours later it was an IS 350 F Sport for $315 a month, tax included, with $1,000 down. He said he'd pulled strings because he liked me. I wasn't a tough negotiator. I was a kid who couldn't say yes or no.

My dad heard it in my voice and told me to come home. I walked out with two lessons: anyone who walks in without knowing the game is defenseless, and the price is made up. Say yes too fast and you pay more.

That day put the idea in my head. In 2014 my partner and I started Legacy Auto Leasing to sit on the buyer's side of the table. In 2016 I built AutoPal on the same promise. I negotiate with a network of over 40 dealerships across South Florida, then deliver the car to your door.
